The Best Drummer?

I think you all forget Omar Hakim. Versatile, powerful, succesful and a great guy.

Sting, Weather Report, Dire Straits, David Bowie and Madonna etc.

I LOVE Omar's approach.
He's so powerful and
fluid and all over the
kit. He's under-rated.

Can someone post a good
discography of him here?

To me the words "The Greatest" fall into many categories (Jazz, Latin, Rock, Blues, Alternative, Big Band, Country, Reggae, etc... It's WAY too difficult to pick "The Greatest."

However, the one player that has recorded and performed the best representation of most if not all of those styles is Vinnie IMO. The fact that he graduated from the University of Zappa alone makes him a front runner. All of Zappa's drummers were educated that music is wide and diverse field (even Jimmy Carl Black). Vinnie was at the head of the class.

He has constantly put himself in different situations that let him experience different styles and situations. This to me, puts him at the top of the list.

I find allmusic to leave out a great amount of artists work compared to this Site

Yes, this question can be argued to death without any universal consensus from all tub-wackers.

Maybe if you ask "Who is the best all-around drummer?", that would be a better way to assess skill level in the areas of technique, genre, musicality, credentials, discography, historical impact, performance(stage presence), and such.

Many of us will fall victim to naming specific drummers because they are visible to the public eye. Current drum cats will probably attest to the fact that they realize there will be some Joe Shmoe drummer that lives in Idaho who can walk circles around them any day. These are the guys who stay humble and are grateful to be where they're at.

Like many of you mentioned, selecting your 'best drummer' is highly subjective based on your direct experience, emotional attachment, and popular appeal.

All in all, I think that everyone should do their part in excelling to the best of their ability ; to never cease from being teachable and being in the moment to love what you beat on a daily basis. There is less work out there to make a living, but enough stuff out there for you to chase your wildest dreams!
